about

I was introduced to this song last year when Ben (my husband and bass player) included it on his "All Time Top Ten" podcast. The topic was "Songs from Outer Space".
You can find the episode here: www.radio4all.net/index.php/program/62673

He played the Carpenter's version. I thought- wow! The Carpenters were pretty trippy. Smash cut to May 2013 and I received a notice for a pitch for TV/Film that a replica of the Carpenter's version of the song was needed. I recorded the chorus in an hour (just in time for the deadline) and it left me intrigued and wanting to record the whole thing. So then I discovered that Klaatu was the original artist, and I sing my praises for this completely awesome tune about communicating with aliens. Now mind you, this is the most elaborate psychedelic progressive rock piece I have ever tackled. But I had a little help from my friends: Nashville's own Steve Cunningham plays the guitar, while Ben plays the bass and contributes the counter vocals and harmonies.
So here it is: the recognized anthem of World Contact Day. Enjoy.

lyrics

Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft (The Recognized Anthem of World Contact Day)

(John Woloschuk / Terry Draper)

In your mind you have abilities you know
To telepath messages through the vast unknown
Please close your eyes and concentrate
With every thought you think
Upon the recitation we're about to sing

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants of interplanetary, most extraordinary craft

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants of interplanetary, most extraordinary craft

You've been observing our earth
And we'd like to make a contact with you

We are your friends

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants and interplanetary ultra-emissaries

We've been observing your earth
And one night we'll make a contact with you

We are your friends

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants of interplanetary, quite extraordinary craft

Please come in peace we beseech you
Only a landing will teach them
Our earth may never survive
So do come we beg you
Please interstellar policemen
Won't you give us a sign
Give us a sign that we've reached you

With your mind you have ability to form
And transmit thought energy far beyond the norm
You close your eyes
You concentrate
Together that's the way
To send the message
We declare World Contact Day

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants of interplanetary, most extraordinary craft

Ahhh

Calling occupants
Calling occupants
Calling occupants
Calling occupants
Calling occupants of interplanetary, most extraordinary craft
